FORMER RAMONES MANAGER LINDA STEIN FOUND MURDERED
(link goes to Newsday .com)

Words simply cannot describe the shock and sadness over the loss of friend and former Ramones manager Linda Stein. Our families have been intertwined for 32 years now, and there really are no appropriate words I can find at this time, except possibly to say how grateful I am for her being the woman she was. My thoughts are with her family.
- Mickey Leigh

On behalf of my family, and the people at Joey Ramone Productions, a farewell salute to our dear old friend Hilly Kristal. Though my brother and I never called him dad (daddio maybe) he was definitely a provider, and of more than just a place for us to play, back in the day. It was a second home. Actually more like an incubation chamber where we could develop and thrive, before getting kicked out into the world. How often do you come across a place like that after you're born? Or a guy who welcomes you into it.

Those may be my personal feelings, but I am sure they are the echo of thousands of others who are feeling much lonelier today. But my most heartfelt condolences go to his real children, Lisa and Dana, his family and his many loved ones.

If this website would even be here today, were it not for Hilly, is, at the least, a very valid question.

-Mickey Leigh

Mickey Leigh, brother of the late Joey Ramone, has issued the following statement concerning the seeming endorsement of Doc Martens.

"Obviously, we are in the same position as Courtney Love, as well as the Estates of the others depicted (in the ad). We were never consulted about this ad. We were never asked for permission to use Joey's image, or paid for the use of it. As Executor of my brother's estate I never would have approved this ad as Joey never wore these shoes. And, not that my brother was terribly religious, but the fact that he was Jewish, and this ad is not exactly Kosher, makes it that much more inappropriate, inconsiderate and contemptible."

"Though we were about to formulate a statement to the above effect, Courtney certainly has a louder, more influential voice, and I am thrilled that she got through to them."

RAMONES TO ROCK THE BIG SCREEN!

New York, NY. (September 18, 2006) - Rory Rosegarten's Rosegarten Films has secured the rights to "I Slept with Joey Ramone," the only authorized biography of the late Joey Ramone, the lead singer of the seminal rock band the Ramones, for a film on the legendary rocker's life.

The book, written by Joey's brother Mickey Leigh along with Legs McNeil, longtime music writer and co-author of "Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History Of Punk," will be published by Touchstone Books (a division of Simon and Schuster) in the fall of 2007.

In addition to securing the motion picture rights to the book, Rosegarten also negotiated the rights to Joey's life story from his mother and the executrix of Ramone's estate, Charlotte Lesher. Rosegarten will also be working closely with Ramones Productions for the use of the Ramones recordings in the film. Rosegarten will serve as a producer. Leigh will serve as an executive producer.

According to Rosegarten, "I grew up listening to the Ramones and seeing them in concert. Joey's story is fascinating and very touching. He overcame incredible physical and mental hardship to front one of the most influential bands in the history of rock and roll. He helped cement the Ramones at the forefront of the punk movement in the late seventies and eighties, only to die a tragic death at 49. I am both thrilled and honored that Mickey and Charlotte have trusted me to help tell Joey's story."

Leigh said, "I've been friends with Rory since 1979, when he unofficially managed my band, The Rattlers, until he went to college. I trusted him with my career and life back then, and now I trust him with my brother's life story. I am thrilled to have him by my side for this project. Rory and I finally get to work together on a story close to both of our hearts."

"Rory has been a friend of Mickey's for a long time. He is a caring and thoughtful guy and I'm confident he'll handle this story with all the sensitivity it warrants," said Lesher.

Rosegarten continued, "I'm really amazed how many studios contacted me when the word leaked that I was going to do this project. Everyone has been very enthusiastic about making a "Joey" film. The band has had a tremendous impact on popular music in the United States, but the most exciting thing is how huge they are worldwide. The movie will have an astounding foreign appeal."

Instrumental in helping Rory put this deal together was entertainment attorney Jon Moonves, who helped navigate through the legal twists and turns. Not an easy project to take on, it took nearly a year to finalize. Rosegarten observed, "Between the estate, Mickey and Ramones Productions, it was a giant jigsaw puzzle. This was a tricky deal, but everyone pulled together to make it work."

Rosegarten is represented by Jim Wiatt at the William Morris Agency, and Jon Moonves and Loan Dang of Del, Shaw, Moonves, Tanaka, Finkelstein and Lezcano. Michael Friedman of Troutman Sanders represented Leigh. Dave Frey of Silent Partner Management and Janine Small of Carroll, Guido & Groffman represented Ramones Productions and Charlotte Lesher on behalf of The Joey Ramone Estate.

Here's the official press release...

The date for the sixth annual JOEY RAMONE BIRTHDAY BASH has been announced: the event will take place at famed New York City venue Irving Plaza on what would have been JOEY's 55th birthday: Friday, May 19, 2006. Tickets began selling in November 2005, when word leaked out via the message board on the JOEY RAMONE website, www.joeyramone.com. Last year's BASH sold out two weeks before the performance line-up was even announced. Now, everyone can purchase tickets at www.ticketmaster.com and www.irvingplaza.com

The first JOEY RAMONE BIRTHDAY BASH was held just one month after the rock star lost his seven-year battle with lymphoma in April 2001. Living up to a promise made to the singer to celebrate his 50th birthday, JOEY's mother Charlotte Lesher and brother Mickey Leigh organized an all-star rock and roll party and have continued the tradition annually. All proceeds are donated to the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

Customarily, the BIRTHDAY BASH features musical performances by a bevy of internationally acclaimed and up-and-coming artists, as well as screenings of rare and exclusive videos of JOEY and The Ramones. This year's roster of participants has not yet been revealed but is expected to be as exciting and stellar as any before.

Additionally, plans are being made for a special exhibition and sale of photographs by some of rock and roll's best photographers, to run for several days prior to the BIRTHDAY BASH at a gallery in Manhattan. Details will be forthcoming.

RAMONES GUITARIST JOHNNY RAMONE DIES IN HIS SLEEP AT HIS HOME IN LOS ANGELES

Los Angeles, CA (September 15, 2004) -- Johnny Ramone, co-founder and lead guitarist of seminal 70’s punk rock band The Ramones, died in his sleep this afternoon at 3:03 pm in his home in Los Angeles. Ramone had been fighting an ongoing five year battle with prostate cancer. At the time of his death, Ramone was surrounded by friends and family that included his wife Linda Cummings, Eddie and Jill McCormack, Rob and Sherrie Zombie, John Frusciante and Robert Carmine. Additional friends who gathered at the home included Lisa Marie Presley and Michael Lockwood, Pete Yorn, Vincent Gallo, Steve Jones, Talia Shire, Gia Coppola and Jackie Getty.

Johnny Ramone, whose real name was Johnny Cummings, co-founded The Ramones in 1974 along with fellow bandmates Joey Ramone, DeeDee Ramone and Tommy Ramone, the only surviving member of the original band. The band, which gained critical acclaim and a huge following in New York’s underground music scene at the time performing at clubs such as CBGB’s, is widely credited for bringing the “punk rock” genre to the forefront. The Ramones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Johnny Ramone is survived by his wife Linda Cummings and his mother Estelle Cummings. His body will be cremated during a private ceremony.

It is now finally official!
The City Of New York dedicated the corner of Bowery and Second Street as Joey Ramone Place on November 30th, 2003 at 1:00pm. Contrary to other reports elsewhere that this was a done deal long ago, New York finally gave it up for Joey Ramone!

On Sunday, November 30, 2003 the City of New York officially named the corner of Bowery and Second Street "Joey Ramone Place" in a ceremony honoring the late rock music legend. The street sign dedication was the culmination of the efforts of his fans, family, contemporaries, community and the city itself to recognize Joey Ramone's historic achievements and contributions to New York City's music scene. It's a fitting tribute to a man known and loved in New York and throughout the world for his contributions to the creation of the genre of music known as "punk rock"; which, not coincidentally, was born out of and first defined on the streets of the East Village. In fact, Joey Ramone is credited so much so for that genres creation he is universally hailed as "The King of Punk". As the singer of The Ramones, and long-time East Village resident, Joey’s talent, influence and passion for music remain imprinted on this lower east side neighborhood. No one did more than he to continuallly nurture a downtown music scene that provided, and proved to be, a spawning ground for new talent to develop. The location of the sign, marking one of the corners closest to renowned punk nightclub CBGB's, is significant to his millions of admirers worldwide.

New York City Council Members Alan Jay Gerson (1st. District) and Margarita Lopez (2nd District) officiated at the joint co-naming of Joey Ramone Place. The event, which was open to the public, began inside CBGB's at 315 Bowery (between Bleeker and 2nd Street) and continued at the corner of Second Street and Bowery. Joey's family asked long time friends Legs McNeil and John Holmstrom, the co-founders of PUNK Magazine, to preside over the initial part of the ceremony which featured brief appearances by speakers including: Tommy Ramone, Marky Ramone, Steven Van Zandt, Hilly Kristal, Jim Jarmusch, Danny Fields, Lenny Kaye, Kevin Patrick, Arturo Vega, Jesse Malin, Handsome Dick Manitoba, Andy Shernoff, Richie Stotts, Donna Gaines, Meg Griffin, Vin Scelsa, Rachel Felder, George Seminara, Phil Hartman (FEVA), Tish & Snooky (Manic Panic), Ray Goodman and Jimmy Webb (Trash &Vaudeville), Sonia Sanchez (Wowsville), Dave Frey, Sy Hyman, Mickey Leigh, and Charlotte Lesher.

JOEY'S SOLO RECORD

Joey Ramone's legacy continues with his solo album, Don't Worry About Me, on Sanctuary Records!

After The Ramones hung up their jackets in 1996, Joey Ramone continued to work diligently writing and recording songs. Don't Worry About Me, the result of these solo efforts, has garnered recognition as his best work to date. Sadly, Joey succumbed to cancer in April 2001 at the age of 49.

Producer, guitarist and long-time friend Daniel Rey worked alongside Joey on Don't Worry About Me from day one. He recently completed final mixes on songs that hadn't been mixed prior to Joey's passing. Joey recruited world-class bassist Andy Shernoff (The Dictators) and split the drumming between Frank Funaro (Cracker and Del Lords) and special guest Marky Ramone. Captain Sensible (The Damned), who guests on "Mr. Punchy," said "if anyone is looking for someone to 'blame' for punk, his would have been one of the first doors to knock on. Joey Ramone has contributed some bloody marvelous moments to the world of music."

The Ramones were indeed the progenitors of punk music and, as the voice of The Ramones, Joey not only influenced thousands of bands, but also established standards for punk fashion and culture. The Ramones enjoyed a 22-year career that yielded 23 records and countless world tours. Lemmy (Motörhead) says "Joey was my friend and he understood rock'n'roll better than any other singer of my generation." CLICK HERE FOR REVIEWS!
